First off, I want to mention that – after nearly two years of inactivity – I have finally relaunched my fanlisting collective, Close to Heart. I’ve been pretty absent from the fanlisting world, but I’m trying to slowly remake my collective. I’ve revamped the pages, added a new skin (featuring the cast of Lost), and am now going through my fanlistings in order to weed through the ones that I’ve lost interest in. I also recently applied for a few new fanlistings (all television characters), something which I haven’t done in awhile. Anyways, if you’re interested, take a look at the new layout that I’ve created, and please give me some feedback! I know it’s not the best since I haven’t used photoshop in over six months, but I did my best.
As I mentioned in my previous blog post, I just turned eighteen yesterday. My family is planning on traveling to New York City on our way to Virgina Beach this July, and as my gift my parents decided that they would buy me a ticket to any Broadway show of my choosing. I was nearly speechless when they told me, since seeing a show on Broadway has been one of my dreams for a long time (I almost got to see Rent before it closed, but I sadly wasn’t able to go). I have never been to New York before, so just the news that I was going to be walking the streets of Manhattan made me giddy, so this gift has me nearly over the moon. My parents hate musicals, so I thought that there was no way they would ever make time for me to be able to go see a show. I am going to be seeing the show with my sister (whose birthday is in a week, and who is also receiving a ticket to the show as a gift), and am really looking forward to it. The hardest part of this whole process is going to be picking a show to go see! So I’ve included a list of my top 7 shows that I’ve listened to and am familiar with.
7. Hairspray
6. Les Miserables
5. Avenue Q
4. In the Heights
3. Spring Awakening
2. Wicked
1. Rent
As of right now, Rent, Spring Awakening, Les Miserables and Hairspray are no longer playing on Broadway. Avenue Q is currently playing off-Broadway, meaning that I have a choice between that, Wicked and In the Heights. I would absolutely love to see Wicked, but I might be going to London next January, and I was definitely planning to see it if I go there. Then I would prefer to see In the Heights, since I don’t know when I’m going to be in New York again. Well, I still have a couple of weeks to make a decision!
How about you guys? What’s your favorite musical, and which one would you choose if you were in my place?

Amazing selection of musicals, I hope you have a fantastic time – I don’t think you could go wrong with any of these!
Thanks! I know I’ll definitely enjoy any show I see, but it’s still going to be difficult to choose which one to actually see!
Happy belated birthday:) Good luck with choosing which musical too watch. Wicked sounds interesting:)
Thank you! I think I’m leaning towards Wicked, but I’m not sure yet.
Happy belated birthday!
Currently, my top musical of choice to see is The Lion King.
Thank you! I haven’t seen much of the Lion King, except for their Tony performance, but I’ve heard that it’s quite good.
Great choices! So far I’ve seen local productions of Rent, Spring Awakening, Avenue Q and Hairspray. All were great except for some casting choices. Avenue Q, for me, was the best one I’ve seen because the whole cast really delivered. I’m hoping to see a great local production for Les Miz, In The Heights and Wicked. Wicked is a dear favorite of mine so I really hope if they make a local production of it, it’ll be good. As for The Lion King, I also believe you shouldn’t miss it. Some friends of mine have seen it on Broadway and they’ve always told me how amazing it is and that it is probably their most unforgettable Broadway musical.
It’s pretty amazing how many local productions you were able to attend. Unfortunately, we almost never get any shows over here (Hairspray came once, but I wasn’t able to go), so my only chance at seeing any musicals is by going somewhere else. Thanks for the suggestions, Michi!
So great choice !
Merci!
I’m really disappointed I didn’t see Spring Awakening or Wicked with the original casts…I still haven’t seen them at all. One of my favorite musicals is Thoroughly Modern Millie — that was so much fun.
I wish I could have seen them with their original casts as well (Rent too!). I’ve never heard of Thoroughly Modern Millie – maybe I’ll give it a try if I remember.
I want to watch Rent and Wicked. I liked Hairspray and hated Spring Awakening!
I haven’t heard anyone who actually hated Spring Awakening. Maybe you got a bad cast? I don’t know how it is live, but I do love the music, and I’m still hoping to catch it on tour someday.
Wow!! What an amazing birthday present! It is my dream to go to NY and stay for a month and see a broadway show every single night!!! That’s after I win the lottery to pay for it all of course LOL. You are super lucky. I love all the shows you picked (except ITH, I’m not too familiar with it). But I have to say that my #1 choice would be a musical called “Next To Normal” – AMAZING! Then of course I would want to see Shrek The Musical, Legally Blonde and Billy Elliot. I am such a kid at heart LOL. There are so many more that I would want to see, but I could just go on forever and ever. Of your choices though, I would go with Wicked!
I am going with Wicked actually (if all goes as planned), and I am super psyched for it! It’s my dream to move to New York one day and frequent plays and musicals as often as my money will allow me to. I’ve actually heard of Next to Normal – I’ve heard a few songs here and there, but I’m not that into it yet. I probably will be, though, after I give it a few more listens.
[...] highlight of our time in the city was definitely my sister and I’s birthday present – a Broadway Show. We originally planned to see Wicked but had difficulty buying tickets in advance (they were [...]
