Just for Aesthetics: Underwater

I don’t know how the weather has been in other areas of the world, but here in Montreal we are having one extremely hot summer. We’re usually used to the weather picking up mid-June, but this year we have seen temperatures in the 30s since the beginning of the May. It has been absolutely stifling hot the last couple of weeks, and since I am now off from school I have been enjoying the beautiful weather by spending my time outside. And that has included spending almost every day this week by the pool, either doing laps or laying on a mattress while reading a book.

I absolutely adore summer, and for as long as I could remember I have adored swimming. I have always been around water. When I was really young I spent a lot of time in my cousin’s pool, and when I got older and my parents bought their own home one of the first things they did was have a swimming pool installed. Everyone in my family knows how to swim and loves the water.  I personally prefer swimming in the ocean, but I also love my pool. One of my favorite things about swimming is being underwater. I like to hold my breath and sink down to the pool bottom and just sit there and stare at the water around me. There’s something very peaceful and soothing about being underwater and not really being able to hear or see anything or anyone around you. It’s like being in your own little world.

(Most of these photos were taken by taken by the photographer Elena Kalis, who takes quite a few underwater photos. She’s very talented, and you should google her to take a look at some of her other photos.)

I had actually never heard of her before, but the underwater photos that I found absolutely captivated me. Her work is so mesmerizing.

It hasn’t been too awful hot here lately (I live in NE Ohio), just rainy and warmish. You are so lucky to have a pool though (I’m guessing its in-ground)! I love swimming, especially at night. I love feeling weightless and like you’re in another world when you’re underwater.

I live in Arizona– we’ve been getting 100+ temperatures since May, I pretty much hide out in the house like it’s the Zombie Apocalypse and all the weapons are hidden here– it’s kind of dumb, but it’s better than letting the sun try to kill me.

Also, those images are stunning. I love underwater stuff for aesthetics because it actually works, it tends to evoke emotion in someone.

I know exactly what you mean – sometimes it gets way too hot to stay outside and I take refuge inside my house. My parents call it wasting good weather, but there is such a thing as too much heat.
