Today marks the beginning of my eighteenth year on Earth, and as a result my entrance into the world of adulthood. I think what I’m going to love about being an “adult”, as loosely as I can use the term, is the lack of the age restraint. Being able to sign my own documents, being able to enter contests, not having to always read the fine print to see if I have to be the age of majority. Upon turning eighteen, most of my friends went out with their friends and got drunk at the nearest bar, or bought beer at their local SAQ(the alcohol distributor of my province), celebrating the fact that they no longer need fake ids. However, I have never been the get-drunk-and-pass-out-type, and I am not allowed to drink for the next nine months or so because of medication I am on, which means that it’s not an option at all. I think I might just go and buy a lottery ticket tomorrow, just so I can feel as if I am suddenly allowed to do things I was never able to do before. I can’t wait until I’m invited somewhere 18+, so I can finally not worry about whether or not they check identification.
I was originally going to have a large group of friends over, but too many of them canceled because of other plans couldn’t get a lift to my house (I am highly deprived of any sort of public transportation). It was advertised as a pool party, so even more canceled when they heard about the weather (some friends I have, huh?). I ended up completely canceling the event this morning, deciding that I was not in the mood for a party that no one wanted to show up to. Needless to say, I am not in the mood I was hoping to be in for my birthday, but I’m trying to make the best of it. My parents keep telling me that I should do something “special” and not let this day pass by without doing anything (or I’ll regret it, apparently), but is it wrong for me to spend my birthday the way I want to – lounging around my house and relaxing? I’m not one for crowds, and I much prefer to spend my time at home watching television or a movie than hanging around at a club pretending to have fun.
This hasn’t been the most positive post, but I do truly love birthdays. At least birthdays from my childhood. They’re always so colorful – with the balloons, the cake, candles, sparklers, and the presents. I actually stopped having birthdays when I was around twelve, but I haven’t forgotten how happy they used to make me. When I have kids, I plan to make sure that they don’t miss out on all the merriment that birthdays can provide.
So, before, I go on with the pictures, I ask you: How did you spend your most recent birthday? How old did you become?

Congratulations!!!! I wish you all the best
When I turner 18 nothing really changed. I felt the same way, had the same responsibilities. Hope you enjoy this year because having 18 feels goooooooooood hehehe!
Lovely images you picked (except for the last one) *coughs*! hehehe!
Thank you! I know what you mean – I felt absolutely no different when I noticed it was past midnight. But I guess I’ll feel like an adult eventually.
Happy Birthday! I am sorry that your friends canceled on you. I would probably do the same thing – just stay home and lounge around. That’s my favorite thing to do. My last birthday, I turned 26 and I went to work, then came home and just lounged around. My friends insisted on throwing me a small bowling birthday party that weekend but it was nothing too big – just a little get together that just used my birthday as an excuse to have it in the first place.
Thank you! It’s nice to know that I’m not the only one who enjoys having time to themselves. And it’s nice that your friends decided to do that for you – it sounds like they care about you.
Happy birthday! I hope you still made the best of today and spent it doing what you like most. You can always catch up with your friends later
My most recent birthday was my eighteenth as well. It happened the first week that I went off to college and was the day before classes started, so I was still fairly homesick and didn’t know too many people, but my friends from my dorm baked me a cake and made sure I purchased a lottery ticket (except my mom always used to let me buy lottery tickets when I was little because I liked scratching them off, so that wasn’t really too exciting).
Thanks! That was so nice of your dormmates, especially since you didn’t really know each other! I’ve scratched a couple of tickets in the past too for my parents, but it’ll be nice to be able to buy my own ticket for the first time.
Belated happy birthday, Marie! Wow, I can’t believe time flies by so fast and you’re now 18!
I remember celebrating my 18th birthday with friends and just treating them out to a simple lunch. Nothing really fancy but I was really happy. We just spent the whole time talking about random things and they gave me a gift and a cake in which all of them contributed to. My parents also gave me my first laptop back then so it was also pretty memorable. But I’m just like you too who don’t prefer crowds. I also prefer staying at home than partying. I guess it’s a good thing that my friends aren’t also the partying type so all is good.
Oh and I know I’m currently on hiatus from blogging but I’m planning of coming back and changing URLs so hopefully, I’ll be back soon.
Thank you! And it sounds like you had a pretty great 18th – I also have a few friends who don’t like to party very much, so we usually tend to bond in our solitude, haha.
I can’t wait for you to get back! We’ve missed you!

Happy Belated Birthday! Welcome to adulthood.
So sorry that your friends canceled on you like that. It sounds like you handled it well though and didn’t let it completely ruin your day. Kudos to you for that. i would have been a complete mess.
18 was a long time ago for me, but I do remember it pretty well. My birthday is at the end of September and I had just started college at the very end of August. I had only been at school for a few weeks and so I didn’t really know anyone all that well. But there were a bunch of girls in my dorm who bought me a cake and came knocking on my door at midnight to have a little mini-celebration.
I am now 31 and for my last birthday I took the afternoon off from work and then my boyfriend treated me to a nice dinner. A couple of weeks later My parents, sisters, and their significant others came to my house for a family party.
Btw, you have the same birthday as my grandfather. He turned 97 yesterday.
Take care!
Thanks for the birthday wishes! It sounds like both your 18th and your 31st birthday were great. That was very nice of both your dormmates and your boyfriend. And Happy Birthday to your grandfather as well!
Happy belated birthday! I love birthdays too, and the pictures are absolutely magical. I am really sorry that your friends ditched you like that. For shame!
I spent my last birthday in New York City. Visited it for the first time, and it was so awesome.
Oooh, lucky! I’m going to be visiting New York next week for the first time, and I can’t wait!
