Post-Weekend Review: Bright Star

Monday, March 15th, 2010

“A poem needs understanding through the senses. The point of diving into a lake is not immediately to swim to the shore but to be in the lake, to luxuriate in the sensation of water. You do not work the lake out, it is a experience beyond thought. Poetry soothes and emboldens the soul to accept the mystery.”
-John Keats

Starring: Abbie Cornish, Ben Whishaw, Paul Schneider, Kerry Fox

Summary: The drama based on the three-year romance between 19th century poet John Keats and Fanny Brawne, which was cut short by Keats’ untimely death at age 25.

What I Liked: Abbie Cornish was absolutely amazing in her portrayal of Fanny Brawne – her talent was especially striking in the more emotionally heavy scenes of the movie. I was amazed at the chemistry that existed between both Ben and Abbie – I felt absolutely sucked into their romance. I found myself willing a happy ending for the two of them, even though you know full well that there will be none. I also enjoyed the random bursts of Keats’ poetry, especially since Ben Whishaw did such a wonderful job of reciting them. The film was also stunning on a visual level.

Top 7: Too-Soon Cancelled Shows

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

As an avid watcher of primetime television, there have been many shows over the course of the years that I have fallen in love with and that have been pulled off the air despite their positive reviews and popularity. Unfortunately, it all comes down to ratings in the end, which usually means that quality television is usually tossed aside in favor of shows that pull in more viewers, but which are ultimately garbage. These shows are usually canceled at the last minute, which means that most of them lack any sort of closure, and some even end on quasi-cliffhangers because the writers believed that they were going to be going into another season .

The following list is “my” list of shows that I wish had stayed on the air longer. Out of the seven shows, I’ve seen all episodes of Moonlight, Freaks&Geeks, Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies and Veronica Mars. I’ve seen a few episodes here and there of the others, and have heard mostly positive reviews from many other television viewers. Obviously, there are some great shows that I didn’t include on this list, since I have never seen them (such as Firefly), although I’m sure that they were fantastic as well while they were running.

7. Moonlight

Although I’ll admit that it ‘t have one of the most amazing scripts in the world when compared to other really great shows, it was definitely my Friday-night guilty pleasure! Yes, it’s a show about vampires, but I never felt as if it was at all silly while I was watching it. One of my favorite parts of this show was Mick, but also his friend Josef (played Jason Dohring, who I absolutely adored as Logan on Veronica Mars!). The relationship between Beth and Mick was also developing when the show ended. This show was originally renewed for a second season, but CBS cut it just before they were supposed to film the second season, which unfortunately kept the writers from creating any sort of ending to the show. I would have really have loved this show to have at least one more season.

Just for Aesthetics: Pancakes

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

I’ve been pretty inactive all week, which has been mostly due to a mixture of having to study for numerous midterms and being so deathly ill that I’ve been avoiding any internet activity beyond checking my Gmail when I had free time. I’ve been off as of Thursday night, and have been sleeping for the last two days to try and recuperate. I still have a cough and sinus problems, but I’m pretty much as good as new. I’m off for my March Break until the 22nd, so I should be posting regularly throughout the next week.

Anyways, today I am going with my family to what we Canadians call a “sugar shack”, or “cabane a sucre” in French. It’s basically an outing where we go to the places where maple syrup is processed – there, you’re able to taste fresh maple syrup as it’s being made, and you usually have a big dinner of scrambled eggs, ham, pancakes, baked beans, and lots and lots of maple syrup. I used to go when I was younger with my school, but my family tries to go at least once a year because it’s just so yummy!

In preparation for tonight I was looking at pictures of pancakes, and I thought I would share them since they are just so yummy! Just looking at these pictures made my hunger skyrocket. I can’t wait to taste some of these – yum!

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

I don’t know what this balloon theme was spurred on – maybe because there have been a bunch of birthdays recently within my friends and family. Anyways, balloons are just the cutest things, and I think they’re one of the things that I love most about birthdays – they’re especially fun to prepare! (:
