Top 7: Canadian Golds (+1 Bronze)

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

The energy that Canada had in reaction to these Olympic Games was phenomenal. Even though I live almost on the opposite end of this country, every morning I would arrive to school amid the chatter about which Canadians dominated which sporting even the night before. For those of you who don’t know (and as a Canadian commercial for McDonald’s boasts) Canada this year won the most gold medals that any other country has won in the Winter Olympics. We finished third overall for the medal count, but we dominated when it came to gold medals. This is pretty impressive, considering that Canada had never before won a gold medal on home soil before, in the Montreal and Calgary Olympics. Alexandre Bilodeau has become a national hero by being the first Olympic athlete to obtain this honor – but he was followed by 13 other athletes in teams in all sorts of sports, from hockey to figure skating to speed skating. Altogether, Canada won 26 medals.

7. Ashleigh McIvor – Women’s Ski-Cross

This is one gold medal that I didn’t watch personally, but I’ve been hearing some great things about Ashleigh ever since she won. There were also many shots of her during the closing ceremony, although I think she wasn’t actually wearing her medal, which was strange.

Just for Aesthetics: Winter

Even though I’m not a huge fan of this seemingly never ending season which we Canadians put ourselves through, I decided to find some pretty pictures that almost make the cold, ice and hail all worth it. Almost.
All pictures were taken from We <3 It, and are linked back to their original source.

Spotlight On: Skins

Friday, February 26th, 2010

My love for this show grew exponentially last night after watching Freddie’s episode. Many people had mixed feelings about the episode, but I personally loved it. I think people who had a hard time accepting it or liking it are those who have never dealt firsthand with mental illness, and therefore are unable to relate to Effy and her actions.

Skins is an English show that revolves around the lives of teenagers living Bristol who are attending the fictional sixth form college Roundview College. The series recycles its cast every two seasons, since at the end of two years the characters have (for the most part) moved on and gone to university. Every episode also centers on one character in particular (sort of like LOST, but with no flashbacks), although each episode usually tries to include everyone in some way, even if we just see a couple of glimpses of them.

Even though I watch shows like Gossip Girl, that depict a rather glamorous and unattainable form of teenage life, I much prefer Skins because of its blatant realism. Teenagers are shown for what they are: most of us are messed up and confused about who we are and who we want to be. We fall in love several times a week, and we try to make sense of our overwhelming hormones and emotions. We are overwhelmed with the responsibilities that we are starting to face, but resentful of the fact that the world still treats us like children. We dream big, but we’re conflicted about whether or not we should live for the now and risk messing up our lives later on, or give up having fun in the present in order to concentrate for a better tomorrow. Being a teenager is not fun, which is exactly what this show is all about.

Internet Plugs: Facebook Statuses

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

This is going to be a relatively short post, because I just spent the last two hours repairing the damage of losing my layout files. I was able to reconstruct most of it, but it still doesn’t look the same yet. I’m going to call it a night, and focus on the little things that are left to do tomorrow.

Anyways, I’ve been seeing lots of photos either on Tumblr or on CollegeHumor which are basically spoofs of what fictional characters would have as their status. Some of them are pretty creative and funny, so I thought I’d share a few.

Post-Weekend Review: Anna Karenina

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Title: Anna Kareninapevear_karenina

Author: Leo Tolstoy

Published in: 1877

Summary: Anna Karenina has two plots that run side by side throughout the novel: the story of Anna and the story of Levin. Levin’s story is an expression of Tolstoy’s pastoral nature and a reaffirmation of the novelist’s vision of the simple life. The beauty of the seasons and the pragmatic work of harvesting absorb Levin. Levin’s relationship to the land and life is contrasted with Anna’s enigmatic and destructive passions. Anna’s appearance in the novel represents a rift in the tranquil world which allows physical passion and irrationality to prevail.
